If you are coming to Barcelona for a while and you want to avoid the really touristic places, here is a short guide which can help you feel the city in a different way.
Places to visit
In Barcelona there are some places that are not on the first pages of the tourist guides but are really worth to see and will make you appreciate the city even more. I will start with two central squares: Plaça del Rey and Plaça Sant Felip Neri. They are both close to the Cathedral, on its back side. All around the area there are nice squares and back yards which make you feel like you are in the Middle Ages. They are amazing by day, but even more beautiful by night, especially with the light coming from the lanterns.
Plaça del Rey makes you feel like in a fairy tale or even more like in a story about princes and princesses. You can sit there and have a beer in a nice evening and you will be amazed that there are no millions of tourists around you. You will just hear the musicians who play flamenco or rumba around and you can enjoy the moon, always looking at you from over the medieval buildings.
Plaça Sant Felip Neri is also a really nice spot to spend some minutes with the great architecture of the city but it is also important for other reason. It is a place of memory. During the Spanish Civil War the place was bombed by the Frankist army and a lot of people died. If you look more carefully, you will find the marks of the event on the walls. Sitting on the fountain, think about the history and about what the city and its people have been through in order to become the present cosmopolitan Catalonian capital.
Again in Barrio Gotico there is another square (in this case a triangle) with a different fame. The so-called Plaça del tripi has the official name George Orwell and is one of the symbols of the underground and drugs life of the city. Now it is just another touristic spot in the bar area of Gotico, but if you look more carefully, you will understand that there is a reason for those people staying there for a whole day without doing anything.
Estació França is the most beautiful old-school train station in town. OK, you will probably never use it, but it is worth just to enter and see the big model of the station and the nice platforms with a high rooftop.
Parque del Laberinto is a little bit far away from the city center. You take the green line and take off at Mundet. Then you have to go a little bit up and you are there. There is a small palace, a really beautiful garden and of course the labyrinth which is really nice and not just for kids. It reminds a lot of the south of Spain and another nice thing is that up from there, you can also climb a little bit in the mountains, enter the forest and have some rest form the noise of the city.
Culture
The cultural life of the city is so rich that it is impossible to pack it in one guide. But here are some starting points. The rest is up to you and to your particular interests.
Free galleries
One of the best things in Barcelona is that there is a lot of culture for free. Long live the city hall (even though the locals will talk for long time about the crisis)!
Santa Monica is an art center with a really big and nice exhibition space. Normally they make contemporary art expositions and what is more, organize conferences on topics, connected to arts. It is a must see, because it is really central, on Las Ramblas and one of the best art centers in town. It is open till late.
Where: La Rambla, 7
Another hidden treasure of Barrio gotico is Base Elemens Urban Gallery which is much more underground and connected to street art. But if you like this kind of art, you will be amazed by the place.
Where: C/ del Palau 6
La Capella is another contemporary art gallery with interesting projects. What is more, it is situated in an old church, part of the old hospital complex in Raval. The space is amazing and the exhibitions are usually worth.
Where: Hospital, 56
Raval is a neighbourhood with a lot of galleries and art centers, but the biggest and most interesting one is the MACBA-CCCB. And if the first one is more famous and payed, in CCCB you can enter for free every morning and Sunday afternoon with card from the local libraries (that is also gratis and gives you access to all of them, you just need an ID and you can have one in 5 minutes). CCCB organises also a lot of activities and a good part of them are not payed.
Where: c/ Montalegre, 5
Still in the city center, on Plaça Catalunya you can find another nice gallery with interesting contemporary art expositions. Espai Cultural Caja Madrid is on Plaça de Catalunya, 9.
I will finish that part with Caixa forum, an old fabric in the style of Barcelonian modernism which is now a spectacular exhibition space. Close to Plaça Espanya and at the foot of the beautiful Montjuic hill, it is the best walk for a Sunday afternoon. Caixa forum normally has at least 3 or 4 exhibitions inside and don´t miss the terrace! It is open till late.
Where: Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 6-8
Bookshop
If you are a big book fan and you want to avoid the famous and fancy bookshops, I recommend la Central, there is everything that you can look for and a lot of space to read. There are more than one Centrals in Barcelona, but go to: C/ Elisabets, 6 in Raval and don´t miss the basement! There are also a lot of activities that you can take part in.
Libraries and Civic centers
Every neighborhood in Barcelona has a library and the so-called civic centers. Go to the library and take your personal Carné de biblioteca, you can use it in every library in the city, and take home books, CDs and DVDs. Also there is free internet. In the civic centers you can find all kind of workshops and activities. You can start from dancing, learning to play a musical instrument, creative writing or cooking.
Other places:
One really interesting place in the heart of el Born is RAI, it is an association that organizes different activities: arts, workshops, international activities and also works with kids. The place, the atmosphere and the activities, it is all worth to take at least a look.
Where: C/ CARDERS 12
Antic theatre is also a very special place in the same neighborhood in the city center of Barcelona. First, it is the spectacular building where in the yard you can have a beer and be amazed by the atmosphere. The cultural space is also more than interesting: scene for alternative theatre but also cabarets and a lot more. Check it out!
Where: Carrer de Verdaguer i Callís, 12
Another place which could be interesting for those who are socially active is El Lokal – a store, place for meetings and a free market in Raval. Here you can buy books connected to sociology, politics and history, punk t-shirts and CDs. I always pass by there to buy post cards with the drawings of different socially active painters (most of them are from South America) for 10 cents and to support the cause.
Where: C/ de la Cera, 1 Bis
Live music
Barcelona is the city of music and all around the city there are a lot of halls and places where you can listen to live music. Here are some propositions.
Let´s start with the big ones: Sala Apolo (https://www.sala-apolo.com/) and Razzmatazz (http://www.salarazzmatazz.com/) are big clubs with a lot of halls where they organize different parties, concerts and are nice places to go to dance. Also a bit expensive, but sometimes the concerts are good enough, so it is totally worth the price. Apolo is in Poble Sec, really close to the city center and Razzmatazz is a bit more far in Poblenou.
Then, here are two smaller halls that I find interesting and that usually organize live events with different kinds of music. Sala Monasterio is more central, close to the old port, el Borne and the way to the beach of Barceloneta. In their program you can find rock, rumba, but even metal or underground reggae bands. Sala Sandalo is in Poblenou, a small stage on the second floor where you can listen to local bands and DJs but also live jam sessions.
Sala Monasterio is on Passeig Isabel II, nº4
Sala Sandalo is on c/ Roc Boronat, 6
In the suburbs there are two important halls/ clubs where you can enjoy really good concerts. Salamandra 1 & 2 are in l’Hospitalet and they organize really different kind of concerts, from local bands to middle level world artists. Estraperlo is more alternative and dedicated more to punk and reggae music, but there you can also find some interesting events. The club is in Badalona, but you have a metro going there (as well to l’Hospitalet), so no problems going to and back from the place.
Salamandra 1 Av. Carrillet 235 & Salamandra 2 Av. Carrillet 301, l’Hospitalet
Estraperlo Isidre Nonell 9, Badalona
All around the city center of Barcelona you can find small clubs where they play live music every night. Here are some recommendations and the list of one of the most well-known:
Big bang bar is one of the classic ones, hidden in the heart of el Raval. Normally the music is rock or jazz jam session but sometimes there are invited artists in different styles. And also most of the nights the entrance is for free.
Where: c/ Botella 7
23 Robadors is another hidden trasure of Raval, really close to the Rambla of the neighbourhood, there is live music from all parts of the world and their specialty is flamenco nights. The place is small but really nice to spend an hour and a half with good company and good music. The entrance usually is not more than 3 euros.
Where: c/ Robadors 23
Jazz Sí club is again in Raval and as you can notice from the name, they have a rich jazz program. But not only! It is worth the entrance which can sometimes go up to 8 euros.
Where: Carrer de Requesens, 2
Inusual Project is a cultural space/ bar where you can hear live music, dj sets and also see documentaries or an exhibition. It is not opened as a bar every night and for that reason you have to check their program, but if there is something on, it is sure that it is going to be worth.
Where: C/ De la Paloma Nº 5
Harlem jazz club is in Barrio Gotico and is also one of the classics in the city. The entrance is fixed at 6 euros.
Where: Carrer de Comtessa de Sobradiel 8
Gran Bodega Saltó is in Poble Sec, really close to the center again. It is an old-school wine pub with really nice decoration (don´t forget to look up). There are live performances almost every night and they are for free. The place is really great to hear a local band and to have a glass of wine or beer.
Where: Carrer Blesa, 36
In Barcelona there are so many places with live music, that you will be amazed, but have these in mind and go on to discover a lot more!
Bars
Where to drink something in the night? The life of Barcelona is mostly on the streets, but if you want to enter a bar, have a few drinks and meet new people, here are some nice places that I recommend you to try.
In Barrio Gotico
Bar Mariachi is in the heart of Barrio Gotico, this is the place where the local musicians go to have a beer and is well known as the bar of Manu Chao. Sometimes there are improvised concerts and almost every night someone will take the guitar and play some rumba. Order a licor café (dangerously good, as the barman says) or the Mariachi special (vermouth). Pay attention on the drawings, the signs and the posters! You may learn more about barcelonian underground scene.
Where: c/ Còdols 14
Red rocket is just across the street from Mariachi. If you want a place with good (rock) music, but not so many people, this is the right one. Also touristic, but you can spend some nice time in a nice environment. They have Estrella for 1 Euro till 10 p.m.
Where: c/ Còdols 21
Nevermind is one of the best skate/punk bars in the city center. Also cheep beer till 10, nice alternative people and light punk. And what more, popcorn is for free.
Where: C/ Escudellers Blancs Nº3
Manchester is the name of a bar where they like to play music from the Manchester punk/new wave and more scenes. The beer is also cheap till 10. There are actually two Manchesters in Barcelona. In the one in Gotico they open an underground hall during the weekend just for dancing. The one in Raval is really small, but with similar atmosphere.
Where: c/ Milans 5 in Gotico and Carrer de Valldonzella, 40 in Raval
All around these bars and especially along c/Ample and c/ Avinyó in Gotico there are also a lot of nice places. The only inconvenience is that they are usually full of tourists and you want to spend more time with the locals, right?
El Raval
Gypsy Lou is a place where you can often hear some good live music but also have a drink in a really pleasant atmosphere. As you can notice from the name, they like gypsy and Balkan rhythms, but also alternative sound.
Where: c/ Ferlandina 55
And if that is not enough, there are a lot more nice places on c/ Joaquín Costa, the party street in Raval. If you prefer something in open air, go in front of MACBA or on the Rambla del Raval, there is some local and even more international ambience there.
El Borne
In the district of Borne the bars are a little bit more expensive but there is one hidden treasure, where you can drink a tea, have a cheap meal or just listen to a jam session surrounded by the ambience of Morocco. Té Arte on c/Dels Cecs De Sant Cugat, 13
Websites
Here are some places where you can find information on what to do in Barcelona.
Butxaca (http://www.butxaca.com/) is the official cultural guide of the city. You can also find it on paper. Here you have the program of the cultural activities day by day, but also recommended expositions, plays and films and of course the addresses of the sights.
Altaveu.cat is a good site to find information on the concerts in the whole Catalunya and even in Valencia. Of course, the concerts are not the most famous ones, but mostly of the local bands.
On http://usurpa.squat.net/ you can find the program of the activities of a lot of squats in Barcelona and believe me, it is almost as rich as the official cultural guide.
Other activities
Everybody knows about the famous Primavera Sound in May. But I recommend you another really good two day festival in Barcelona: Cruilla (cruillabarcelona.com) in July. OK, it is really exhausting to see 7-8 concerts in two days, but the line up recently is really strong.
And something a little bit underground: during the summer every fool moon there is a party with a lot of drums on the beach of Mar bella. It is called the fiesta of luna llena and is worth to go after midnight and wait for the sunrise.
Social
Barcelona is really famous for its squats which are everywhere: for example in the city center, less than a block away from the Ramblas. Most of them are of course in the mountains and in the suburbs. Here is a list of the most active ones, where you can find a lot of activities (for more info look at http://usurpa.squat.net/):
In CSO LA ASTILLA in l’Hospitalet they have a skate park, a big hall and they organize fiestas, concerts and even flamenco nights!
CSO LA CARBONERIA is really big, really central and really active. Pay attention on the drawings outside. The activities are of every type.
CSO GUERNIKA is one of the more central ones, really close to Ramblas. They organize a lot of things, different workshops and play documentals. A must go place, especially if you are a little bit socially conscious.
CSOA LA PANSA is the place where they organize Food not Bombs in Barcelona every Thursday. It is also central, in Born and close to the way to the beach.
If you haven´t heard about the urban gardens, check it out here: http://urbangardensbarcelona.wordpress.com/06-the-urban-gardens-of-the-city-of-barcelona/ and go to visit some of them (also a lot in Barcelona). For example HORT DEL XINO is really central, in Raval on c/Ruina Amalia 11b. You can work a little bit in the garden, spend a couple of hours surrounded by green plants, talk to interesting people and even see a film in a hot summer night.
